Talk: Women defending the land in Latin America

  • BarBichette 188 Rue Théodore Verhaegen Saint-Gilles, Bruxelles, 1060 Belgium (map)

Throughout the world, women are often at the forefront of the fight for climate justice. Thousands of land defenders in Latin America are women, leading the charge to protect people and nature in their surroundings and calling for change in practice and policies that threaten people’s livelihoods and destroy the environment, including through overconsumption and waste.

On 4 April, join us at BarBichette to hear the stories of women-led climate actions in Latin America with Mariela Pino, an agricultural engineer, climate worker and activist from Chile. Mariela currently works with grassroots organisations focusing on zero waste throughout Latin America and she will bring reflections on how waste is a manifestation of the extractivist society we are living in now. Mariela will be in conversation with BarBichette full member Lauriane Veillard, who will also share perspectives from the European context and discuss with Mariela and our members the impact of overconsumption on other parts of the world.

Mariela currently works for the Global Alliance for Incinerators Alternatives (GAIA), as the Member and Technical Support Officer for Latin America, following up and contributing to the development of 16 projects from México to Patagonia, which have a lot to do with life and caring for nature’s health and protection.
