Biphobia and mental health: the road to go

  • BarBichette 188 Rue Théodore Verhaegen Saint-Gilles, Bruxelles, 1060 Belgium (map)

Bi+ people are the largest group in the LGBTQ+ community. Yet, they are the least likely to be out. Bi+ people can face rejection from both the straight and the queer communities, are often fetishised or experience harassment, and struggle with their identity more than other groups. This translates in high rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm or even suicide among bi+ people.

But things can change. Bi+ visibility, better identification and awareness of the specific forms of discrimination faced by bi+ people, and greater access to education on mental health and sexual orientation are all needed to allow bi+ people to be out and live healthier lives.

Do you want to learn more about biphobia and mental health, and think about actions to create more visibility and awareness of these issues? Then participate in our event on 9 March!

What you can expect:

  • Listen to personal stories of people identifying as bi+.

  • Learn more about biphobia and identify its patterns.

  • Understand how (internalised) biphobia can affect the mental health of bi+ people.

  • Discuss possible actions to prevent discrimination and marginalisation, and improve the mental health of bi+ people.

  • Work together on an awareness-raising campaign on biphobia and mental health, addressed to both the general public and decision makers.

  • Connect with other people in a safe space, learn and exchange experiences.

You will hear interventions from:

  • Alexis Dewaele - Senior lecturer at Ghent University, specialised in mental health and mental health of sexual minorities.

  • Bella FitzPatrick - Executive Director at IGLYO (International LGBTQI Youth & Student Organisation)

  • Catriona Graham - co-funder of BarBichette

Moderator: Alejandra Piot Pérez-Abadín - Board member of Euro Youth Mental Health

We are happy to welcome you, from 6pm, in the new eco-feminist space Barbichette. Join us to learn and make a change!

There are limited spaces so please register to secure a spot.
